What is keratin?
Keratin is a protein present both in the surface layer of the epidermis, but also in nails, body hair and hair. It determines both the shape of the hair, their smooth or curly structure, but also constitutes the component that gives them their strength. While hair is made up of 95% keratin, it does not renew itself and disappears over time, which will gradually weaken it. It is also attacked by smoothing, straightening, and by the successive discolorations it undergoes. Hair lacking in keratin will be easily brittle, coarse and dry.
Keratin has a real protective role thanks to its structure in scales which makes the hair resistant, and it is also this which gives them their elasticity and their suppleness.
The different types of keratin
There are different types of keratin which can come from both animals and plants.
Keratin of animal origin is that contained in the horns and hooves of animals, but also in sheep’s wool, poultry feathers or eggshells. Often present in cosmetics, it is the same as that which is naturally present in humans, and generally in mammals.
Keratin of plant origin, also called phytokeratin, is a protein having a structure very similar to that of animal keratin. These are generally corn, soy or wheat proteins, and not keratin per se, which is only present in animals. Phytokeratin has very good affinities with the hair, but also the skin and the nails because of its proximity to animal keratin.
Beta keratin is a special form of keratin found in birds and reptiles. It is stronger than animal keratin, which is also called alpha keratin.
Why use keratin shampoo?
Our hair is often subjected to treatments which weaken it. If you regularly use a hair straightener or hair dryer, or regularly bleach, a keratin shampoo might work for you. It can help you protect your hair against the attacks it will undergo, and also restore shine and softness to damaged hair. A keratin shampoo can also help if you are looking to straighten your hair or tame your frizz. However, it does not actually repair the hair, but rather temporarily fills in the places where the keratin is damaged. The effects of keratin shampoo therefore disappear if the treatment is not regularly reproduced.
What types of hair is keratin shampoo made for?
The keratin shampoo is particularly suitable for people with frizzy hair and who have straightened, to people whose hair is damaged by chemical treatments, and also to counter porous hair. Dry hair can regain shine and softness thanks to this contribution. Keratin, however, can weigh hair down, making it stiffer. It is therefore not ideal for people wishing to maintain plump and flexible curls.
Keratin shampoo, ideal for maintaining Brazilian smoothing
Keratin shampoo can be useful for maintaining and making Brazilian straightening last . This smoothing fixes the keratin around the hair to give it softness and shine. Using a keratin shampoo to maintain it helps prolong the effects. As long as you opt for a mild shampoo, it will thus preserve the keratin envelope created during smoothing and make it last for several months.
Which composition to favor for a keratin shampoo?
It is important to choose a mild shampoo to maintain your Brazilian smoothing. First of all, avoid keratin shampoos that contain sulfates. They are aggressive with the hair fiber, and will tend to both remove the keratin deposited around the hair fiber if you have performed a Brazilian straightening. Sulfates make the keratin supply in your shampoo less effective. So opt for a keratin sulfate-free shampoo containing as many natural ingredients as possible.

Reviews of keratin shampoo in general
More and more present in various hair care products, keratin is an interesting product for people whose hair is weakened or damaged. This temporarily fills any gaps in keratin that your hair may have, making it softer, smoother and shinier. A real second life for hair that has undergone aggressive chemical or thermal treatments.
Using a shampoo enriched with keratin is also a good way to maintain and prolong the effects of a Brazilian straightening, as long as you choose it without sulfates so as not to attack the keratin layer deposited around the hair fiber.
However, be careful not to abuse shampoos containing keratin. If these can be very effective in cure, too frequent or too close washing could overload the hair in keratin. To let them breathe between the different treatments, it is best to adopt this type of shampoo occasionally during a treatment or to alternate with another mild shampoo that will wash your hair without damaging it.
