Why trust us ?

The Selectos editorial team spends thousands of hours researching, analyzing and comparing products to find the ones that offer the best value for money.

None of our articles are sponsored. We sometimes receive a commission when you purchase a product through our links, which allows us to fund our work while remaining completely impartial.

How did we make our choice?

With the appearance of the first dreaded gray hair, many start looking for the ideal color to mask it or, at least, to blend it, all without having to go to the hairdresser every month. However, it is not easy to find a dye that is both effective and respectful of the hair. Indeed, with certain conventional products, it is not uncommon to suffer from hair dryness, or even irritation of the scalp.

We have therefore gathered some information that may enlighten you and help you guide your choice.

First of all, it seems essential to us to distinguish between chemical and vegetable colorings:

  • Chemical dyes : they are currently more and more criticized, because they work by a process of penetration into the structure of the hair and by oxidation. Used repeatedly, they weaken and sensitize the hair, which becomes dry and brittle. They are generally formulated from ammonia, which is potentially irritating to the skin. In addition, they are – unsurprisingly – harmful to the environment.
  • Vegetable colors : on the contrary, they do not attack the structure of the hair but are placed around it to form a sheath. They have the advantage of being generally real care for the hair: they protect the hair while providing volume and shine. They are obtained from natural dyes, the best known being henna . On the other hand, you should know that it is impossible to really lighten your hair with vegetable colors, the oxidation process – rather aggressive – being ensured by chemical processes.

The colorations also appear in various forms:

  • Gels and creams : ready to use, they are very easy to use. Often the setting is very quick. Chemical dyes are mainly found in this form, although some natural brands are able to develop products with a safe composition.
  • Powders : vegetable powders must be mixed with water before being applied, in paste form, to the hair. This process takes a bit of practice, but is not too complicated once you achieve the ideal consistency. Many even enjoy this little preparation ritual! The exposure time is however longer.
  • Sprays : some brands offer spray colorations – the best known certainly being L’Oréal Magic Retouch – which are particularly recommended for touch-ups on the roots. However, the application and the texture of this type of product are generally not the easiest and most pleasant, and their composition is often far from impeccable.

Finally, here is some additional information and criteria to take into account when buying hair color:

  • Shades : the number of shades offered can vary greatly from one brand to another. When it comes to natural dyes, henna is the most widely used dye. If natural henna ( Lawsonia inermis) is known to bring warm and glowing reflections to the hair, know that there are different variants, which can also be mixed with other vegetable powders (indigo, walnut stain …) in order to to offer a wide range of colors. The advantage of powders is that you can easily create your own mixture!
  • Two-step coloring : this is a recommended process for effectively hiding gray hair with natural coloring as well as for transitioning from chemical to natural coloring. For best results, you are advised, first, to color your white hair (and not necessarily all of your hair) with natural red henna. Then you can apply the shade of your choice. In this way, unsightly orange effects are avoided, and the coverage of white hair is optimized.
  • Application : it is advisable to apply the coloring to clean hair. The thicker and stronger the hair, the longer the exposure time required. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, do a small test of the product on a wick before applying everything on your head. Also note that hair all reacts differently: the results of a dye on one (e) will not necessarily be the same on the other.
  • Composition : in addition to the usual undesirable, ammonia and its derivatives, resorcinol and PPD (P-Phenylenediamine) are preferably to be avoided. Henna of lower quality are likely to contain metal salts . Note that, in the same range, the composition is subject to some variations depending on the chosen shade. Finally, since vegetable powders often come from abroad, particularly from India, the ideal is to favor ethical channels, in which workers and nature are respected.

It is therefore with these key elements in mind that we set out to search for the best colorings for white hair of the moment, in the French and English speaking worlds.

Our selection criteria enabled us to sort through the thirty or so products considered. User feedback then helped us decide on the dozen remaining copies, based on their efficiency, ease of use and value for money.

So, discover without further delay our selection of the 4 best dyes for gray hair of the moment!

PS: if your hair tends to dry out or suffer from colorations, do not hesitate to consult our reviews of the best masks and hair oils , or the best shampoos , and in particular organic shampoos , softer.

Our Pick: Khadi Herbal Tincture

Our Pick, Best Mid-Range

Khadi Herbal Tincture

Hailed by many consumers, this natural coloring made from certified organic vegetable powders is attractive for its ease of application, its effectiveness on gray hair and its good hold.

This natural and organic dye not only covers gray hair, but also brings shine and volume to your hair. In powder form, it is easy to mix and apply. If the exposure time can be quite substantial, the intense result and the good hold justify it. It comes in 11 shades, but you can of course customize the mixes!

The brand combines many natural and medicinal ingredients according to ancestral Indian Ayurvedic recipes in order to offer high quality cosmetics. The vegetable colors are formulated from very finely ground powders for an optimal rendering.

They are available in 11 shades, the composition of which varies slightly, of course, but remains impeccable. This Natural Hazelnut version includes indigo, henna, amla, bhringaraj and neem powders, for a medium to dark brown result.

After coloring, the hair is shiny, shiny and fuller. The color is deep, for ideal rendering and hold. Far from damaging the hair, the dyes act more like a treatment. And, the advantage with powders is that you can mix several shades to get your ideal color.

Most importantly, they effectively cover gray hair. With light shades, a single application, with an exposure of 15 to 20 minutes, is necessary.

For darker shades, the brand recommends coloring in two steps for an optimal result: first apply alma & jatropha red henna or pure henna to your white hair before proceeding with the coloring of your choice, which will have to apply 30 minutes to two hours.

The setting time is certainly a bit long – which is the case with all vegetable colors – but the game is worth the effort. Many users are convinced by the effectiveness, ease of application and reassuring composition of Khadi hair colors.

Finally, we appreciate the ethics of the brand, which works fairly with producers in India and has obtained the BDIH label, which attests to the environmentally friendly manufacture from ingredients mainly from organic farming.

Christophe Robin Temporary Coloring Gel

Ideal for a quick touch-up on the roots, this gel blends discreetly into your natural color. Very practical to apply at home, it is resistant to a few shampoos and is suitable for several uses.

Ideal for quick touch-ups between two complete colorings, this temporary coloring gel will accompany you for a few weeks before fading discreetly. It is made with 92% natural ingredients and pigments, and immediately covers gray hair while subtly blending in with the rest of your color. Convenient to apply, it comes in four shades and is suitable for three or four uses.

This coloring is particularly suitable for discreetly masking the first gray hair without going through a complete dyeing. Indeed, it immediately conceals the latter with fairly natural coverage, which prevents the unwanted root effect, and makes them silky and shiny. It is available in four shades (golden blonde, dark blonde, dark brown and light brown).

Users are delighted with the discretion and effectiveness of the product, especially for those who do not want to color their hair entirely or are looking for a practical solution between two more complete treatments.

One of the big advantages of the gel is that it is ready to use – you don’t have to mix anything up, which is very convenient. Users also find the product very easy to use at home.

You can apply the dye using the brush provided, or simply with your fingertips, after putting on the pair of gloves provided for this purpose. While it’s especially great on the roots, you can use it on your lengths as well.

After an exposure of 40 to 50 minutes depending on the nature of your hair, your white hair will be camouflaged for five to seven shampoos. After that, the product will begin to fade – harmoniously, fortunately! The small tube will allow you to make three to four touch-ups.

Mostly composed of natural ingredients, the coloring is quite gentle and appreciated by users with sensitive skin. Its smell is not unpleasantly chemical. However, its composition is not the most perfect: it contains among others ethanolamine, potentially irritant and allergenic, phenoxyethanol, a controversial preservative, or a quaternary ammonium.

Despite this, the practicality of the product is undeniable. Ready to use, it’s easy to use at home and subtly blends into your color, making it ideal for touch-ups on gray hair.

A mid-range alternative: Tints of Nature Permanent Dye

Tints of Nature Permanent Dye

This gel is distinguished by the number of shades offered in its range, its long hold, its ease of application and its rapid setting. In addition, it is supplied with a very practical complete kit.

Here is an alternative that will appeal to fans of more conventional cosmetics. It is a coloring very easy to use thanks to its gel texture and its very fast setting. It effectively covers gray hair while providing it with suppleness, softness and shine. It is equipped with a complete kit (coloring, shampoo, treatment, charlotte…) for optimal results, and is available in no less than 24 shades!

The English brand presents permanent colorings formulated from 95% natural ingredients, of which 75% are from organic farming. They are also vegan and cruelty-free. But, above all, they provide 100% coverage of gray hair, while providing flexibility and shine.

Indeed, users say they are delighted with the silky appearance of their hair after applying the dye, which also perfectly covers gray hair. The long-lasting hold of the tincture is also very popular, as is its fairly gentle composition, which does not seem to cause irritation even in the most sensitive people.

The range offers 24 shades, so that everyone can find what they are looking for! Note that the colors are actually a bit darker than expected: be sure to consider this information when making your choice.

The product, in gel form, is very easy to apply. He should only pose for 30 to 40 minutes, which should convince those in a hurry. Be aware, however, that a single bottle of hair color may be a bit tight for dyeing very long hair.

Finally, it seems important to us to underline that, although the colorings are mainly natural, their composition is not faultless: PEG, PPD, ethanolamine and phenoxyethanol are part of its list of ingredients (even if the brand indicates that it uses as little PPD as possible).

Tints of Nature also offers semi-permanent henna creams , free of PPD, but whose hold still convinces consumers less.

Honorable mentions

Centifolia Natural Henna : very similar to our entry and mid-range choices, it comes in certified organic powder form and comes in 10 shades. The natural coloring brings volume, strength, shine and pretty reflections to your hair while effectively covering gray hair. It requires an exposure time of 1 to 2 hours, is easy to apply thanks to its very fine texture, and can be used one to five times depending on the length of your hair.

Logona Vegetal Colorant Care : this 100% natural and organic coloring powder is available in 12 shades. It brings a nice highlighted effect to the hair, covers gray hair well and takes care of it. The result, semi-permanent, lasts about six to eight weeks before starting to fade. The brand also offers coloring creams , ideal between two powder colorings, which are not only easy to apply but also have an impeccable composition.

Korres Permanent Color Argan Oil : it has the advantage of being available in no less than 27 shades ( note that you will have to opt for a shade lighter than the one desired for a satisfactory result). In the form of a cream-gel, it benefits from a long-lasting hold and brings shine to the hair, which it covers 100%. On the other hand, its composition is not flawless, and is moreover likely to cause allergic reactions in sensitive people. Its price is not necessarily advantageous either.
