Why trust us ?

Our editorial team spends thousands of hours researching, analyzing and comparing products to find the ones that offer the best value for money.

How did we make our choice?

Finding a shampoo adapted to your hair can be a real obstacle course: between the multitude of products available on the market, the packaging all more attractive than the others and the product descriptions that seem far too good to be true, it is difficult to make an informed choice.

First of all, it seems necessary to us to remember that there are different types of shampoos , meeting various needs and desires.

  • Liquid shampoo: this is the most common formula, and the one we therefore favored in this comparison. In this category, specialists differentiate “popular” shampoos from professional shampoos. The latter would be made with real active ingredients and would prove to be more effective.
  • Solid shampoo: the second place classic shampoo appears as a perfect zero waste alternative. It is slowly coming back to the forefront, and is ideal for those who want to control their environmental impact. In addition, their composition is often cleaner.
  • Dry shampoo: generally presented in powder form and formulated from surfactant substances, it cleans the hair without washing it with water. It is an excellent solution for those in a hurry or to space out shampoos, but its use should normally remain occasional.

After having tested no less than 70 shampoos, we carried out an initial selection based on their popularity with authoritative sites, but also with consumers. We have thus pinned some forty products appreciated for their effectiveness and / or recommended by connoisseurs.

We then refined our selection by observing their composition . Today, more than ever, we believe it is essential to inform consumers on this point. Better to know what you put on your skin or hair!

Besides the usual recommendation to opt for a shampoo that is “paraben-free, sulfate-free, and silicone-free”, many other ingredients are often to be avoided. The ideal is therefore to favor more natural formulas, beneficial for the hair and the environment.

We have tried to include, as far as possible, products whose composition is as amazing as possible, but it is clear that conventional cosmetics often include controversial ingredients. If this is a criterion that is important to you, we invite you instead to go for organic shampoos.

This composition analysis allowed us to eliminate more than half of the preselected shampoos. We thus kept a dozen of them, the manufacture of which we deemed acceptable.

Obviously, it is necessary to adapt your shampoo and your washing habits to your type of hair . Dry, fine, oily, normal, or frizzy hair will not have the same needs. We have therefore made it a point of honor to offer you products that are part of a larger range, so that each of you can find what you are looking for.

This is how we were able to establish that the following 4 shampoos are currently the best on the market.

NB: for flamboyant and shiny hair, do not hesitate to pamper it regularly with vegetable oils or, in case of dryness, a hair mask .

Our Choice: Garnier Whole Blends Shampoo with Moroccan Argan & Camellia Oils

Particularly ideal for bringing shine and shine to blond heads, this shampoo brings suppleness, lightness and softness to the hair. Its light texture, its sweet flowery scent and its low price are also very attractive.

Ideal for blond hair, this shampoo is unanimous among users: it makes hair supple, shiny and silky without weighing it down, is easy to apply and rinses, and diffuses a very pleasant, sweet floral scent. Composed of chamomile and flower honey, it illuminates the hair while nourishing it in depth. It is formulated without silicone and parabens, but still has some unwanted ingredients.

Among the wide range offered by the renowned brand stands out the illuminating shampoo Moroccan Argan & Camellia Oils, perfect for giving shine and softening wheat-colored hair. Indeed, chamomile is known for its lightening and softening properties, while honey is renowned for its nourishing properties.

The users are generally very satisfied with its effectiveness: their hair is supple and soft, full of lightness and shine. Long hair with a tendency to tangle can go for the melting detangling treatment from the same range.

According to users, the shampoo effectively emphasizes the lighter or golden reflections of the hair, and this from the first uses. It also helps revive the shine of the hair and fight against their potential dullness. Finally, its subtly flowery scent is also very pleasant.

In terms of texture, there is a fairly thick gel which foams effectively and is very easy to apply and rinse. Watch out whn pouring, the opening in the cap is very wide, and consequently tends to dispense too large quantities of product.

Manufactured without parabens or silicones, there is on the other hand the famous Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), potentially irritant and with very polluting production. It also contains salicylic acid, an ingredient whose potential toxicity will be analyzed in 2021. Some preservatives, potential allergens and quaternary ammoniums complete the list of undesirable ingredients.

What we particularly like about the Ultra Doux range is that it offers a wide range of products suitable for all hair types. Thus, very dry or frizzy hair, for example, will opt for shampoo with avocado oil , while normal hair with a slight lack of hydration will find its happiness with the exotic Coconut Water & Aloe Vera .

The best mid-range shampoo: Nothing But Clarifying Shampoo Sulfate-Free Detox for Natural Hair

Particularly intended for normal hair wanting to regain density quickly, it acts against the excessive production of sebum while bringing vitality and lightness to your mane. Its various formats are very practical.

Ideal if you have normal hair that tends to oil quite quickly after washing, this shampoo helps regulate sebum production while protecting your hair from the harmful effects of pollution and lime. It brings nutrition, vitality and lightness to your hair thanks to its citron extracts with fortifying properties. Its texture and fragrance are pleasant, but its composition is again not exemplary.

Adapted to normal hair, Nothing But Clarifying brings lightness and vitality from the first use. Its very gentle washing base, enriched with glutamic acid and citron pulp, cleanses and detoxifies the hair and scalp. It regulates the excessive production of sebum, and thus delays the greasing of the hair.

Its texture is pleasant, easy to apply and to rinse. Its light citrus scent also appeals to many users. It leaves hair soft and shiny, and is really great when used with a detangling treatment. On the other hand, note that this shampoo is sometimes aggressive for fine and fragile hair.

It differs from popular products by its composition enriched with natural ingredients, in particular citron pulp, which has energizing properties and helps strengthen the hair structure.

When we analyze its composition more closely, we still note the presence of the famous SLES, irritant and pollutant, as well as Disodium EDTA which, although it is harmless to health, has extremely disastrous consequences on the environment (it is not very biodegradable). Triethanolamine is suspected to be toxic to humans.

Finally, note that Nothing But Clarifying has developed a wide range of hair care products, which are available in classic shampoos, intended for normal, dry or oily hair, but also much more specific products, intended, for example, for hair particularly exposed to pollution. . Everyone should find suitable care.

The best high-end shampoo: Kérastase Bain Micellaire Aura Botanica

Formulated with nourishing vegetable oils, it is ideal for dry, weakened and dull hair, which it cleanses and revitalizes in depth. Its packaging and sweet fragrance are very popular, as is its 96% natural composition.

This professional shampoo suitable for dry, sensitized and dull hair protects it against pollution while nourishing it deeply, thanks to its composition rich in vegetable oils, including Brazil nut oil. Its list of ingredients is also quite adequate, given that 96% of these are of natural origin. It leaves hair shiny, hydrated and easy to detangle.

The name “micellar bath” is explained by the composition of the washing base, which contains surfactants. The Aura Botanica bath therefore acts as an organic cleanser, which could confuse some at the beginning of its use.

In fact, you will initially have a feeling of dryness but over shampooing, it will allow the hair to be less “stripped” and your hair will quickly find a more beautiful material. Also note that the product therefore foams less than a “traditional” shampoo.

Intended for normal to dry, dull and devitalized hair, it will appeal to those who tend to use certain heating devices too frequently ( curling iron, straightener or hair dryer ) but will also be suitable for thicker, curly and frizzy hair. It cleanses effectively while protecting against pollution, and leaves hair shiny, soft and hydrated.

It is composed of 96% of ingredients of natural origin, which is already appreciable. It contains Brazil nut oil, which deeply and sustainably nourishes, as well as coconut and argan oil, whose benefits on the hair are undeniable (we also mention them among the best hair oils !).

For the rest, we still point to the presence of salicylic acid, the non-toxicity of which has not yet been proven, as well as some potentially irritating allergens.

Baths are Kerastase’s great specialty. Gentle cleanser, they are ideal for giving your hair a healthier and more natural appearance. Several users nevertheless point out that the product is sometimes difficult to rinse, weighing down the hair a little, and that its price can be prohibitive.

An inexpensive alternative: Timotei Pure Nutrition & Lightness

Formulated to meet the hydration needs of normal to dry hair, it nourishes without weighing down and leaves hair soft and light. It has a discreet and pleasant smell of coconut, and is easy to apply and rinse.

It is intended for normal to dry hair, which it nourishes without weighing it down. It gives you healthy hair, light and soft to the touch. Enriched with coconut milk and aloe vera with strong moisturizing power, it is easy to rinse and has an odor that is highly appreciated by consumers. Without being salutable, its composition is acceptable.

The great thing about this product is that it seems to be suitable for all hair types, whether you have oily, dry or thin hair. This versatility will come in handy if you want the whole family to be able to use the same product.

Timotei Pure Nutrition and Lightness, as its name suggests, promises intense nutrition without weighing down the hair, since the formula is enriched with coconut milk and 100% natural aloe vera, known for their moisturizing properties.

The hair is therefore soft and light, although some users find the shampoo somewhat drying on the hair and scalp. In addition, the slightly thick texture is difficult to lather. That said, the product rinses off easily afterwards.

Once again, we regret the presence of SLES, which is irritating to the skin and a little too stripper for the hair. The shampoo also contains Disodium EDTA as well as synthetic polymers, the use of which in cosmetics is controversial.

Ultimately, its low price and its proven effectiveness still make it a shampoo of choice, which will suit many types of hair. And, if you decide to adopt it in your routine, it is sometimes possible to buy it as a pack for an even lower price.

Honorable mentions

L’Oréal Paris Elsève Extraordinary Clay : thanks to its three clays, it purifies and hydrates the hair in order to revitalize it and give it suppleness, shine and freshness. It is particularly suitable for hair that is oily at the roots but dry at the ends. It allows to space the shampoos, and embeds a texture and a pleasant fragrance. Its composition remains questionable (salicylic acid, benzyl salicylate, SLES, PPG…).

L’Oréal Paris EverSleek Sulfate Free Keratin : it’s a very gentle shampoo at a very reasonable price. With a creamy texture, it effectively cleanses normal, dry or weakened hair, which it revitalizes, protects and repairs thanks to vegetable keratin. However, some users believe that it dries out the hair and scalp. Suddenly, it is particularly appreciated with a conditioner. In fact, it doesn’t really add that little extra to the shampoos in our selection – and is not, contrary to what one might think, certified organic.

SheaMoisture Moisture Retention : ideal for dry and damaged hair as well as frizzy, curly or afro hair, it strengthens the hair while cleansing and deeply moisturizing thanks to the presence of shea butter. Argan oil brings shine and suppleness, while seaweed nourishes the hair. In addition, its composition is really great! Unfortunately, it seems that since the brand changed the formulation of its product, users are less satisfied with its performance.

Rahua Classic Shampoo : it is suitable for all types of hair, even colored ones, it repairs and deeply hydrates. Your hair is illuminated and soft thanks to rahua oil, a plant native to the Amazon rainforest. In addition, its composition is impeccable. Its travel size is particularly appreciated for the practicality of its small 60 ml container. If you can afford it, this is a shampoo to discover.
